    David,
    Congratulations on your Ubuntu install.

find a way to switch back out of Xfce to try something different/

I've never used Xfce under Ubuntu, but I'll take a stab. The Ubuntu
".deb" packages for Xfce probably integrate with the GDM menu. (GDM is
the login screen that prompts you for your password.)

If you log out of X, then at the GDM "Username: " screen do you see
a menu at the bottom-left that says "*Options*", then "*Select
Session...*"? Is Gnome listed in the list of Sessions there? If so you
can use that to switch back to Gnome, and also to set it as the default.

Let us know if that works or not...

Thanks,
Derek

P.S. I noticed you have an ATI Radeon.

The default proprietary ATI driver in Ubuntu 7.10 is functional, but
lame. It doesn't work very well with Compiz (Desktop Special Effects).
There is an all-new ATI driver now, which has been integrated with their
standard Windows driver codebase (like NVidia did a few years ago). The
improvement is amazing; some people are reporting a 300% speedup, and
there is a new ATI driver released every month. For the first time
ever, I have hope that the ATI Linux driver support may finally catch up
to the NVidia driver support under Linux.

You can read more about the new "8.3" ATI driver under here:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide

...but it's still a bit of work to install and configure. My advice
is to wait for Ubuntu 8.04 at the end of the month; supposedly the
driver is integrated as the new default ATI driver.
