Mozex (http://mozex.mozdev.org/) does something similar. It does a lot 
of things (which I don't use), but one thing it does is let you hit a 
key combination inside a text area that brings up your favorite editor. 
It will paste whatever is already in the text area to your editor and 
when you save and close the editor it will paste the result to the text 
area.

It wasn't being worked on for a long time so I stopped using it about a 
year ago but it appears that there is some activity now.
