I will be moving to the general Seattle area in June, assuming I find employment to do so. That's actually why I'm posting; I'm trying to put as many feelers/contacts out there as I can, especially given the nosediving economy. I have heard that our industry has not been hit as hard as others, but I'm suspicious of those kinds of statements. What I'm pretty much looking for as a graduate, is an entry level Software Engineering job. Maybe a QA or Tester? Maybe even just a standard entry level Software Engineer? It would be nice if it was of the Linux related open source variety, but given the economic state I won't be as picky as I may have once hoped to be. Does anyone know of any such positions, or know anyone who might? I've included my LinkedIn page, and my resume website below. Seems to me, though, that this might just be a slow month, because of the off chance that valentines day is on a saturday this year. You wouldn't call a meeting on christmas. All I said was that it would attract more people, bring in more attention to the lug and be better for regulars and guests to do it on a non-holiday. If people won't work on holidays half the time what makes us think they will show up for some computer meeting they know nothing about? I don't actually want to block content as much as nag before allowing you to view content. The goal is to make folks think twice before wasting their time. There are three people I'd like to affect: * 8 year old: during 'homework hours', send them to a 'nag page' if they access certain sites - I don't think you're actually researching my little pony. Perhaps block flash (games) by file type. You should be able to unblock by visiting some web page, which would would indicate you're done with your homework or, in fact, you are researching my little pony. * mom: if any browsing occurs after midnight, remind her that she needs her sleep. * self: accessing the same site for more than 20 hits after 9pm should nag 'So, you found a nice new comic strip and are looking at the entire history and are never going to get to bed. Now stop that and either do some real work or acknowledge you're browsing from your stairmaster so at least you're getting some health benefits.' Again, I don't want to actually block content, just nag before you hit it and make you say 'ok, I mean it.' Logs of that would be cool, but an audit trail isn't really what I want - this isn't supposed to be big brother land. If folks want to browse 'questionable' sites, that's fine, I don't care. If they say "yes, I need to do this" then they're probably right. Just want a little prodding. Anyone have any recommendations for such a system? -- Brian Hatch "What are we pushing? I assume you're doing NAT with a device of some sort. Is it just a run of the mill [wireless] router? Is it something that can run a custom firmware such as dd-wrt? Or do you have an actual dedicated box doing the NAT? Regardless I'd use Squid (it's been a long time since I've dealt with it but it will do pretty much anything proxy) http://wiki.squid-cache.org/ConfigExamples Brian Hatch wrote, On 02/06/2009 10:58 AM: > I'm interested in running a web proxy that can provide some > 'filtering' for our home. It's very similar to what a captive portal does. If you spin up a web proxy (squid, dansguardian and/or tinyproxy come to mind) and have something like simple event correlator (SEC) watching the web proxy logs, it could trigger a notification to the (modified) captive portal when those conditions are met. While I would agree with suspicion, it seems to me that Open Source is a community effort, and such exclusionary actions, while perhaps warranted, certainly don't engender community feelings. My two cents :) In any event, I doubt whoever takes this job would want to speak at a LUG meeting anyway, and if they do speak, I doubt they'll understand the concept of "open source" enough to speak coherently (if they did, they wouldn't have taken that job). -- Sincerely, Jack Mudge jakykong@theanythingbox.com From technoshaman at liawol.org Fri Feb 6 22:32:51 2009 From: technoshaman at liawol.org (Glenn Stone) Date: Fri Feb 6 22:28:50 2009 Subject: [Gslug-general] [Fwd: [Wftl-lug] {Disarmed} Microsoft's "open source" guru job posting] In-Reply-To: <498CE8D7.8000700@bmi.net> References: <498CE8D7.8000700@bmi.net> Message-ID: <20090207063251.GQ5126@liawol.org> On Fri, Feb 06, 2009 at 05:50:15PM -0800, Dave Johanson wrote: > > Hey, make money by helping Microsoft kill FOSS! > Remember, In every SEC 10K filing since 2004 (at least), Microsoft has > identified FOSS as one of the key threats to its revenue. > IMHO, we should follow who gets this job and be sure to turn our backs > on him / her. I am I would either rework your objective to make it more uniquely focused to your skill sets, or dump it altogether and work up you qualifications. Do something about "and advanced software". Make different decisions about capitalization in the qualifications section, I would get rid of the majority of the capital letters. There's no need to say that you got a GED, don't offer that information unless specifically asked, and if they ask if you graduated from high school you can simply confirm that you have a diploma. Most places don't bother asking, I don't think I've been asked ever. Your hobbies paragraph has some broken grammar. Get an A+, Network+ and a CCNA if you can afford the tests right now. You'll have a better chance of getting recruiter attention with them. A recruiter was looking for a dell field tech about a month ago. I want to access the database server from a remote machine so I 1. Verified that the well known port for mysql (3306) is open on my centos machine 2. Issued a grant command on the database to allow access to any database from any machine on my local network -- but I get 0 rows changed 3. I did a netstat -ln | grep mysql on the centos machine and found that it is listening to the wrong port (why???) but even if I use that port on the remote access I get an error, 2003 Can not connect to mysql on server. 5. In both cases I can ping just fine. 6. I verified that the ip is correct for the centos machine 7 my my.cnf only has the following lines: [mysqld] datadir=/var/lib/mysql socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=mysql # Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x # clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package). old_passwords=1 [mysqld_safe] log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid 8. Otherwise, make sure the reverse DNS for your client's IP matches what you used for the grant. I have no idea why you'd be running on a non-default port if it's not specified in my.cnf or on your startup command... Centos/RHEL uses SELinux, which could possibly be the source of your problems. See if you're getting any selinux messages in /var/log/messages. You could always try temporarily disabling it to see if that's the problem. (edit /etc/sysconfig/selinux and set SELINUX=disabled then reboot). Also what's in /var/log/mysqld.log? Actually this isn't necessarily true. If iptables has the port closed or mysql isn't listening on the port you will get this access denied error. Example: $mysql -h localhost -P 10000 -u root -p Enter password: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) There certainly is no mysqld running on port 10000 on my machine or at all for that matter. Note that any time you have anything more specific than % as a host designation you may have conflicts. If you connect from 192.168.1.100, it will use username root with no password. If you connect from 127.0.0.1, it will also use username root with no password. One of the entries that has no password is the one for when you connect from 192.168.1.100. I assume you are trying to connect from 192.168.1.100, because you have posted this error message: Access denied for user 'root'@'192.168.1.100 (using password: YES) So, set the password for the user 'root'@'192.168.1.100' and then try again...? Or, you could delete that entry (for 192.168.1.100) and then MySQL should fall back to using the 2nd entry, which does have a password (because then 192.168.1.% will be the closest match). --Derek From jnicol at bluegecko.net Tue Feb 10 11:22:28 2009 From: jnicol at bluegecko.net (Jonathan Nicol) Date: Tue Feb 10 11:18:30 2009 Subject: [Gslug-general] Stuck on what should be easy In-Reply-To: <4991D204.8010406@itsecureadmin.com> References: <39295f3a0902091529j47e72554j75ef8aa0c003691b@mail.gmail.com> <4990C2E3.3070803@gmail.com> <4990DE63.1050606@realloc.net> <39295f3a0902100954l16c03177gcf1c28bb4c869e2e@mail.gmail.com> <4991C0C4.7070709@gmail.com> <39295f3a0902101016x6e936f86m4ea4a2d18d418fb0@mail.gmail.com> <4991C5CD.7040101@itsecureadmin.com> <4991C8C8.5000301@gmail.com> <4991D204.8010406@itsecureadmin.com> Message-ID: "localhost" is a special word to mysql; it will ignore the port and connect via socket. I think you're hitting a different problem: MySQL has some weirdness with the hostname "localhost". If you try to connect from "localhost", MySQL defaults to trying to use a Unix socket (a special file on the filesystem) instead of an open TCP/IP port. At one time, it was thought that using a local socket was more secure. In contrast, his server was set up to treat the hostname "localhost" like any other hostname, so it tried to connect using TCP/IP. It's weird that a server daemon would treat "connect from localhost" any differently that "connect from 127.0.0.1". MySQL is the only one I know of that behaves this way. Under Debian and Ubuntu, the default config file has been edited to get rid of that behaviour. From Ubuntu 8.10 in /etc/mysql/my.cnf: # Instead of skip-networking the default is now to listen only on # localhost which is more compatible and is not less secure. bind-address = 127.0.0.1 But even setting the MySQL "localhost" issue aside, I too am not able to reproduce his results. Instead of "Access denied" (like him) I get "Can't connect": dereks@laptop:~$ mysql -h www.cool-st.com -P 12345 -u root -p Enter password: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'www.cool-st.com' (111) dereks@laptop:~$ --Derek On 02/10/2009 11:14 AM, Josh Miller wrote: > daleville@gmail.com wrote: > >> Actually this isn't necessarily true. Just my two cents ;) Anyway, I would have a look at the /var/lib/dpkg/lock file... it should be permissions 640, owned by root, and empty when dpkg isn't running. Check your processes, too, and make sure another dpkg, synaptic, or apt-get isn't running. -- Sincerely, Jack Mudge jakykong@theanythingbox.com From btm at loftninjas.org Sun Feb 15 18:17:25 2009 From: btm at loftninjas.org (Bryan McLellan) Date: Sun Feb 15 18:13:22 2009 Subject: [Gslug-general] w32codecs In-Reply-To: <200902151756.31258.jakykong@theanythingbox.com> References: <49989FA2.8040500@bmi.net> <200902151511.22487.konrad@tylerc.org> <200902151756.31258.jakykong@theanythingbox.com> Message-ID: <893823750902151817r1e33fba9jcaa0488d4f7d4015@mail.gmail.com> unfortunately "once and for all" has been tried and hasn't been successful thus far. That is not the way the courts have ruled in the US. libdvdcss2 breaks the encryption on a dvd, thereby circumventing the DRM and violating the DMCA. Fair use was not acepted as a valid defense in the Reimerdes case. It is unlikely that an individual would be taken to court for this. The most common cause of this error is that you have the graphical tool "Synaptic Package Manager" open, and then you go over to a shell and try to use "sudo apt-get" from a command line. If Synaptic is open, you'll get this message, because Synaptic has locked the dir. My guess is that you closed Synaptic, then downloaded and installed the DEBs (and that's why it worked when you tried DEB files manually). --Derek On 02/15/2009 05:36 PM, Dave Johanson wrote: > Problem I believe has been solved by downloading the files as .deb and > installing from there. Representatives of the FCC and InterConnection volunteers will discuss how consumers can prepare themselves to enjoy the benefits of the transition from Analog to Digital television and avoid potential problems in making the switch. Persons interested in volunteering to help people in need of help in the DTV transition are also encouraged to attend. Multiple sessions will be available for walkins, but interested consumers are encouraged to call ahead of time. These events will raise awareness about the DTV Transition and help needy members of the community enjoy the benefits of DTV. We'll do more hands on with the converter boxes and walking through the coupon programs. Also it will give me a chance to introduce you to the Regional Director for the FCC office here in you're interested in volunteering with seniors and other folks needing help. I have a box full of Hauppauge NTSC WinTV, 250 and other cards (who has Desktops anymore though..:) I'd be interested in what kind of signal levels at your locations you guys are getting out of the stock dipole antennas that come with the cards. I think there's a command line that will output channels with signal strength (scantv I thought used to be able to put out signal levels but I may be wrong..) Also if you have more than one card let me know if there are channels that come in with one card but not the other using the same antennas. I'm not sure if my info is of as much use to you as others might be, since I'm not actually in the Seattle area anymore, but... I'm roughly 30 miles outside of Boston, and I actually get surprisingly good reception here in the office (in Westford, MA) using the dinky little antennas included w/my tuner cards. The Hauppauge HVR-850 (usb atsc/ntsc ota-only tuner device), KWorld PlusTV 340U (usb atsc ota and qam tuner device), Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1500 (expresscard54 atsc ota and qam and ntsc tuner device) and pcHDTV HD-3000 (pci atsc ota and qam and ntsc tuner device) all get pretty much the same reception. The KWorld device probably has the worst reception, mostly due to its use of a known-semi- flaky tuner, the NXP TDA18271/C1 (the C2 quickly replaced it, and there's no info on NXP's site about the C1 anymore...). Haven't tried my AirStar HD-5000, HDHomeRun or either of the PCI-e Hauppauge WinTV HVR-* cards over the air at all, they're at home, only connected to my Verizon FiOS TV feed. (Yes, I have a ton of tuner devices, the above doesn't include the 10+ analog-only cards I've also got...) > On Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 9:12 AM, Jarod Wilson wrote: > > > On Friday 20 February 2009 11:56:53 daleville@gmail.com wrote: > > > I'm actually looking for another digital tuner card for my myth box. (Anyone?) They had a demo MythTV box with HDTV capture/playback running. I have a Hauppauge WinTV 150 Mythbox, so I was asking the booth attendant about HDTV capture. He said that Comcast would provide you with a cable receiver box that features a Firewire "out" jack, which could plug directly into a regular Firewire jack on your computer. As I understood it, this provided a digital media stream that could be captured directly (without transcoding). In short: no capture card required. He said that if you bought HDTV cable, you may or may not have the receiver box with the Firewire out (because not all models had the firewire out). But if you called Comcast and requested it, they would replace your box with the model that has the Firewire out. (Maybe it was only on their DVR.) It seems like Comcast was required to offer the Firewire due to some legal requirement... In any event, since Comcast is the big cable company around here, it seems like Firewire capture would be the preferred method. Avoiding the extra digital->analog->digital transcoding step would result in better capture quality. My MythTV box is due for an HD upgrade, so I'd be interested an anyone's experience with local Comcast+Firewire+MythTV experience. Chris has Comcast in south Seattle, and gets *everything* unencrypted off the firewire ports on his cable boxes. This is semi-unusual though. My Verizon FiOS TV feed out here, I get more than I get in clear QAM, but not all of the channels I'm subscribed to, so I have a 3-tier recording setup to be able to record all channels. 1) digital capture cards to record clear QAM stuff (which for me, is ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, etc) 2) firewire port on HD cable box (SciFi HD, Discovery HD, Nat Geo HD, and a fair number of other HD channels) 3) hd pvr hooked to component outs on the same cable box for anything that isn't clear QAM or on the firewire feed unencrypted. This really boils down to very few channels that I care about. Actually, there's a 4th route... digital SD channels -> SVideo into an analog capture card input w/a hardware mpeg2 encoder... -- Jarod Wilson jarod@wilsonet.com From daleville at gmail.com Fri Feb 20 11:44:39 2009 From: daleville at gmail.com (daleville@gmail.com) Date: Fri Feb 20 11:40:55 2009 Subject: [Gslug-general] Re: HDTV capture In-Reply-To: <200902201428.48515.jarod@wilsonet.com> References: <499ED297.3040708@foster.cc> <499EFF7E.20603@cool-st.com> <200902201428.48515.jarod@wilsonet.com> Message-ID: <499F0827.8010809@gmail.com> I have Seattle Comcast, though I only pay for cable internet so there's an analogue filter on my line. That said quite a few standard definition digital channels (I'd guess 50-70) make it through, though only one or two hd channels. The filter is (most likely) able to block some of the digital channels though I assume that it can't block them all without interfering with the actual frequencies that are used to transmit the internet connection. I actually don't have the cable hooked up to my encoder card currently because I can get more HD stuff off the air and there's really not a whole lot on cable that I want to watch. An actual kernel panic, the machine is hard-locked, you can't do anything at that point but hard-reset the machine. > i didn't set WEP, The driver might just want to put in a dummy key to keep itself happy, I don't think that should be an issue. Could be though. I dunno. Given that this is an out-of-tree driver that likely doesn't use most of the standard wireless interfaces, I suppose its possible wpa_supplicant is doing something that's gumming up the works. I believe NetworkManager runs it on your behalf, not sure offhand how to kill it, outside of removing it entirely from the system. But generally, its actually something you WANT to have around. She said in January they revised their terms. In Everett, business customers (and probably residents too?) got a free upgrade from 6 Mbit Down/1 Mbit Up to 12M Down/2M Up. I have no love for Comcast (I'm still sour that they firewalled port 25 on my home connection) but for $60/month, that's a decent pipe. Comcast says 50Mbit is on the way (it's in Chicago right now). A friend in Lynnwood is getting Verizon FIOS this month (because they just rolled it out there). I don't know what speed he gets but they offer up to 50 Down/20 Up for $145/mo. I personally prefer small local businesses to Big Media Conglomerates, but as far as I know DSL is the only thing you can get from a local ISP. If I could get 50 Down/20 Up from e.g. Eskimo, I would! --Derek On 02/27/2009 03:54 PM, David Hamilton wrote: > I don't have a phone line and still use Comcast.
